Humidistats

Humidistats
Southwest Florida “Snowbirds” should have concerns about mildew growth that occurs while they're away.
How the Humidistat Operates:
A humidistat is not meant to be used in place of the air conditioner, but rather in conjunction with the air conditioner. A humidistat is a device used to control the operation of space conditioning systems such as air conditioners, dehumidifiers and humidifiers. When used with an air conditioner, for example, the humidistat cycles the unit on and off based on humidity rather than temperature as provided with a regular thermostat. A humidistat set at 70 percent relative humidity, for instance, will cycle the air conditioner on when relative humidity reaches 70 percent or above, even if the thermostat setting does not call for cooling.
Proper InstallationFor best results, a humidistat should be installed by a licensed a/c contractor. It should be connected in parallel with the thermostat so each can operate independently of the other's control setting. Have the a/c contractor recommend the settings for the thermostat and the humidistat. Inappropriate settings could encourage more operating time than necessary and result in higher energy costs.
Tip: Mildew forms in locations that have poor air circulation as well as high humidity. Whether a family is home or away, it is best to keep mildew-prone areas such as closets, baths, and shower stalls open to increase natural airflow.
